Day 3, 13. Nov. 2005
Roundtable Discussions
This series of 'roundtable' discussions are intended to provoke critical debate regarding some
of the wider applications of the Med-Voices project, both existing and in the future. Drawing
their inspiration from the on-going activities and projects on the ground, the workshop participants
will deliver a concise 10-15 minute presentation with a view to stimulating further discussion
and debate from the floor. In particular, the participation of target groups in these roundtables,
both as presenters and from the floor, is to be strongly encouraged.
Roundtable Discussion 1:
Living in Cities
Convener: Julie Scott
This discussion will focus on the challenges faced by the residents sharing public
spaces and overcoming divisions in divided cities, and neighbourhoods threatened by social,
economic and political forces of upheaval (gentrification, regeneration, displacement etc).
In particular it will focus on the role of 'cultural' and heritage' policies in these processes.
Aimed at: town planners/policy-makers, neighbourhood associations
Discussants:

Convener: Margaret Hart
A discussion on the relationship between ethnographic work, digital media and exhibitions.
How can the Med-Voices project be used to create new types of collections and display and
enhance the experience of visiting museums? Do exhibitions of Med-Voices media act as vehicles
of political and public debate/critical commentary on intangible heritage and/or locally relevant
themes (eg. The Occupation)? Can they mobilise public debate/action around issues often excluded
from public debates on 'culture' and 'heritage'?
Aimed at: museum curators and people from museums/galleries collaborating with local projects, artists, photographers/film-makers,
Discussants:

How can the Med-Voices project assist in the development of culturally-sensitive itineraries
and training for tour guides/entrepreneurs/planners working to celebrate those aspects of a
city's heritage traditionally ignored by guide books and tour promoters? What is the relationship
between intangible heritage, tangible heritage and (cultural) tourism in these cities? What are
the ethical implications of incorporating intangible heritage into the cultural tourism offer of a city?
