Changing forms of the 1st of October Commemoration
Costas Constantinidou

Abstract:
The principal focus of this paper is to explore both historically and sociologically the 1st of October (Independence Day) commemoration in Cyprus through newspapers' discourse for the period 1960-2002. A Hermeneutic approach is adopted to understand the different facets of the commemoration of Cypriot Independence Day within the socio-historical context in which have been developed. In conclusion, this research both challenges and supplements existing literature on the Cypriot Independence Day arguing that the 1st of October commemorative ceremony was symbolically celebrated since the birth of the Cyprus Republic going through three functionally different historical periods: 1960-63, 1976-1992 and 1993-2002, each with their own distinct features.

Note: This will be a 30-minutes academic presentation and it will be supported with photographic material.
