About the conference
Turning Back to the Mediterranean:
Oral History and Cultural Practice in Mediterranean Cities
Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Alexandria, Egypt
11-13th November 2005
There have been numerous exhibitions, public meetings, film screenings, talks and other events
around the Med-Voices cities during the life-time of the project - but our conference Turning Back
to the Mediterranean will be a unique opportunity to review the multiple and dispersed activities
of the past three-and-a-half years in one place, over three days. The conference will, therefore,
be the main dissemination event of the Mediterranean Voices project, and its main aims are:
- To reflect on the multi-layered engagement of the local Med-Voices teams with the processes and practices of living in Mediterranean urban spaces
- To share empirical, theoretical, methodological and practical, policy-related results among the participating cities and research teams and their local partners, as well as with other colleagues and activists from around the Mediterranean
Like the project itself, the conference will be a multi-media and multi-faceted event. All the sessions will
be plenary, and simultaneous translation will be provided in the languages of the project: Arabic, Turkish,
Greek, French, Spanish, Catalan and English
Formal academic presentations
on DAYS ONE AND TWO by members of the local
research teams will be followed, on each day, by the screening
and discussion of documentary
films produced by the Med-Voices teams.
DAY THREE will be devoted to workshop
discussions with practitioners and user group representatives
on applications and possible future development of the project,
with panels on urban cultural policy and planning, museums,
education, tourism and festivals.
An exhibition in the
Bibliotheca Alexandrina, running throughout the three days
of the conference, will bring together the highlights of the
exhibitions mounted by the local project teams over the past
twelve months.
The conference will also be the occasion for the formal launch of the on-line multi-media data base
www.med-voices.org, which will take place at the conference welcome
reception on Thursday evening, 10th November.
The conference dinner will take
place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on Saturday evening,
12th November.
Finally, a conference tour on
the morning of Monday, 14th November will enable those who
do not have to rush to catch a plane to follow part of the
route of the cultural map, which is one of the project
outputs produced by the Alexandria Med-Voices team.
